THE CITY LEARNS MUSIC AT HOME

Before the festival stage, there is a courtyard, a family and a rhythm passed hand to hand.

Praia is a UNESCO Creative City of Music, but the title makes most sense at neighbourhood scale. Batuku, tabanka and funaná endure because people teach them—in families, associations and ordinary rooms where participation begins before performance.

A CREATIVE CITY IS A PRACTICE

The large calendar matters—Atlantic Music Expo, Kriol Jazz and Gamboa all bring the city into public view. The deeper infrastructure is quieter: children listening, elders correcting, groups rehearsing and neighbourhoods keeping their own cadence.

The useful visitor enters as a listener first. Ask before recording. Learn the name of the form you are hearing. Pay the people who make the encounter possible.
