THE BEACH AND THE CAMP
Tarrafal holds pleasure and political memory in the same landscape.

Tarrafal’s sheltered bay invites the body to slow down. A short distance away, the former concentration camp records the violence of Portuguese fascism. Neither place cancels the other; an honest day makes room for both.
DO NOT MAKE ONE PLACE ERASE THE OTHER
Visit the camp as its own encounter, not as a footnote on the way to lunch. Confirm opening conditions before travelling and leave enough time to read, not only look.
Then enter the present town: eat, swim if conditions allow, and recognise that Tarrafal is lived territory rather than a northern backdrop for Praia.
